Indian handicrafts need to be more innovative: Minister

Indian handicrafts will have to be more innovative to boost exports at a time when demand is falling in western markets due to the economic slowdown, Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan said here Wednesday.

“We need to develop new, innovative items to compete in the international market besides upgrading design and technology to boost handicraft exports,” Elangovan said at the inauguration of the four-day Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair.

The fair is being held at a time when Indian exports have fallen 40 percent this fiscal.

In the previous fairs, most of the buyers had come from the US and Europe. With the number of buyers from that part of the world expected to fall this time, the organisers have made special efforts to bring buyers from Latin America this year.

As a special invitee, Colombian beauty queen Miss Colombia Universe 2008, Taliana Vargas, will attend the event.

“The fair is spread over 97,000-square-metre exhibition area, featuring products of 1,500 exhibitors and home furnishing textiles and handicrafts is expected to generate sizeable enquiries and business orders for the Indian handicraft sector,” Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts executive director Rakesh Kumar said.

Nithari killings: Pandher, Koli convicted of murder and rape

Two years after the sensational Nithari killings came to light, businessman Moninder Singh Pandher and his servant Surinder Koli were today convicted for the murder and rape of a 14-year-old girl, leaving the CBI embarrassed as it had given a cleat chit to the entrepreneur.

Pronouncing the verdict in the first of the 19 cases against them, Special CBI judge Rama Jain held Pandher (55) and Koli (38), who have been in judicial custody since their arrest in January 2007, held them guilty of murder, rape, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.

The quantum of punishment would be pronounced tomorrow, the judge said after delivering a 55-page verdict in a jam-packed court. The sentence can be death by hanging or life imprisonment.

CBI filed charegsheet in this case on May 19, 2007 in which it gave a clean chit to Pandher while charging Koli with rape and murder of Rimpa Halder at the house of businessman at Nithari in Noida on the outskirts of Delhi.

Rimpa was first of the victims who was brutally killed on February eight 2005 and her body was found hacked. Koli was suffering from necrophilia (having sex with dead bodies) and also charged with cannibalism (eating human flesh).

In its chargesheet, the CBI had mentioned that Pandher was in Australia with his wife when the incident had taken place and also attached his passport details, a contention rejected by the court.PTI

Police Monday arrested 129 farmers seeking more compensation for their land acquired for a cement plant in Greater Noida on the outskirts of the national capital after protesters turned violent.

Farmers jammed the movement of vehicles on the Grand Trunk Road at Dadri for more than five hours after the police forcefully dispersed them when they were protesting outside the Ambuja Cement plant.

Superintendent of police (SP) Surendra Verma said the police had to use force when the farmers became violent and barged in the restricted area.

?We have arrested 129 farmers for breach of peace, out of which 38 are women,? he said.

Raje Singh, who heads the farmers? struggle committee, said the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC) had acquired land in Badpura village in 2005, paying ?meagre? compensation of Rs.340 per square metre.

The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority paid much more compensation in addition to other benefits of a plot and a job for the member of the affected family, he added.

The farmers of Badpura demanded the same compensation for their land as the sum awarded to farmers of Ghori Bachera but neither the government nor Ambuja Cement paid any heed to them, following which the struggle committee announced it would disrupt the work at the factory, Singh said. (IANS)

Nithari killings: first judgement on Feb 12
Ghaziabad, Jan 30 (PTI) Over two years after the grisly Nithari killings came to light, the special CBI court will give its first judgement in the matter on February 12 as it has completed proceedings in the Rimpa Haldar murder case.
Special Judge Rama Jain completed the proceedings after the re-cross examination of former Noida police officer Dinesh Yadav on January 27 and the recording of statements of the prime accused -- Moninder Singh Pandher and his servant Surender Kohli.

Victim's counsel Khalid Khan had made a request two days back about the conviction of both the accused.

The CBI had filed the chargesheet against Kohli in May 2007, and given a clean chit to Pandher saying he was in Australia when Haldar was raped and murdered.

However, during the trial, victim's advocate got the same charges pressed against Pandher stating there was no specific date of murder of Haldar on record and to give the benefit to to Pandher was not justified by the CBI.

A total of 19 cases of killings, mainly of girls and women, were registered at the Noida police station in December 2006 and all the cases were transferred to CBI for investigation. The agency till date had filed chargesheets in 16 cases and in all, it gave a clean chit to Pandher while framed charges against Kohli.

Haldar was a married woman and was called by Kohli to work at Pandher's bunglow as a maid servant. She was reportedly missing before the disclosure of the Nithari killings. PTI

Honour killings: Two schoolgirls shot dead by cousin in Noida

Greater Noida: Two teenage girls were shot dead by their cousin in a case of honour killings on Thursday in Surajpur locality of this suburb of the national capital, the police said. The alleged killer, Sonu, has been arrested and has confessed to shooting the girls, the police added.

According to Greater Noida District Police Superintendent S K Verma, the two girls - Pinky (16) and Sonam (15), students of Class 11 and Class 9 - went to Aligarh on Saturday with a couple of boys without telling their family. The girls were the daughters of brothers Om Prakash and Gopi Chand.

When the girls called an acquaintance from Aligarh, their family members intercepted the call and came to know about their location. The family, including their 23-year-old cousin Sonu, went to Aligarh and brought the girls back home on Monday.

"The two girls had eloped on an earlier occasion also. Sonu was always conscious about the family's honour and couldn't tolerate the sisters fleeing with anyone and destroying the family's reputation. The family knew Sonu's traits and so after bringing them back from Aligarh, they kept the girls at a secluded place to fend off any wrongdoing by the enraged Sonu," said Senior Superintendent of POlice (Gautam Budh Nagar) R K Chaturvedi.

Sonu is son of Sri Chand, brother of Om Prakash and Gopi Chand.

"Sonu went to Sonam's house on Thursday morning and also called Pinky. He kept asking them with whom they had eloped and why. Then an angry Sonu first shot Sonam with a .315 bore country-made pistol and then fired at Pinky. The fathers of both the girls were away when this happened," Chaturvedi said.

The bodies of the two girls were taken to Gopi Chand's house, barely 100 metres away from that of Om Prakash, before the police came onto the scene.

Though they lived in three separate houses, Gopi Chand, Om Prakash and Sri Chand were a close-knit family and that is why Sonu could not tolerate the sisters damaging the family's reputation, the official added.

While Gopi Chand owns a grocery shop in Surajpur, Om Prakash owns a medical store. Sonu runs a mobile repairing shop in the locality.

Sonu was arrested after a case of murder was filed against him by Om Prakash in the Surajpur police station.

"Sonu has confessed to the murders. Though Sonu is under our custody, he seems totally unrepentent and unremorseful. He still believes what he did was right for his family's image. We are also questioning him about who the boys were with whom the two girls had eloped," Chaturvedi added.

Airport Decision deferred by GoM

The fate of proposed greenfield airport at Greater Noida near here continues to hang in balance as a Group of Ministers (GoM) on Tuesday deferred a decision on it saying additional inputs were required before a final call could be taken on the matter.
?We considered the opinion of the Attorney General. Certain issues need to be discussed further. We require further inputs on these issues,? civil aviation minister Praful Patel said after the 30-minute meeting at North Block.
The date for the next meeting has not yet been finalised. ?We will be informed when it is decided,? said science and technology minister Kapil Sibal who is part of the GoM. This was the second meeting of the GoM.
Finance minister P. Chidambaram and law minister H.R. Bharadwaj are members of the GoM.
The UP government had proposed to create the Taj International Aviation Hub, at an estimated cost of Rs5,000 crore at Jhevar area in Greater Noida which is about 60 kms from here and 120 km from Agra.
After its first meeting in January this year, the GoM had sought legal opinion on the issue and asked Attorney General Milon Banerjee to prepare a report which was considered today.

Greater Noida Airport Not Feasible Says AG Report

The Greater Noida airport plan may well be shelved on Tuesday, when the Group of Ministers led by finance minister P Chidambaram meets to take a final call on the issue.

According to highly placed sources, the ministry of civil aviation is expected to support scrapping any plan to build an airport at Greater Noida and cite the opinion of the Attorney General (AG).

Earlier, the GoM had referred this politically sensitive proposal to the AG to determine whether an airport at Noida violates the concession agreement between the government and GMR Group, the developer of the Delhi International Airport (DIAL). In his report subsequently, the AG clearly stated that till capacity at the existing DIAL is exhausted, no new airport should be allowed to come up.

DIAL is just about 70 km from the proposed airport site at Zevar and as per existing rules, any airport proposal within 150 km of an existing one needs to be examined for implications on existing infrastructure.

Even the current political scenario indicates that the chances of the Greater Noida airport proposal getting a nod are slim. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, the main supporter of this project, is at loggerheads with the UPA government at the Centre and it is widely believed that the GoM would agree with civil aviation minister Praful Patel?s plan of scrapping the project all together.

From Oct 14, free flow of cabs, autos across borders

The much awaited seamless movement of autos, taxis, chartered buses and the state-run buses within NCR is all set to become a reality from next week. Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will be signing the final reciprocal transport agreement on October 14.

An Integrated Police Control Room at Surajpur to be operational soon

Built at a cost of Rs 1.5 Crore, will be fully functional in a month, a senior official said, adding, trial of the control room has been done successfully. “GPS system and Automatic Vehicle Tracking System have been installed in 55 police patrolling vehicles. Using a Digital Display Screen, location of all these vehicles could be traced,” Malay Tandon, Assistant General Manager, HCL Info System Ltd said, adding, Digital map of the district has also been prepared. In the control room, on getting a call, message would be recorded and after tracing the location (of the caller), control room staff would inform the nearest patrolling vehicle. The project, funded by Noida authority, would become fully functional in next 30 days, Tandon said. “A tower is to be installed at Noida Phase II which will take three weeks. Additional 8 telephone lines are also required at the control room. Personnel training will start from next week,” he added.
